Angie is fat. And miserable. And she has her reasons. Her sister, a star basketball player turned soldier, has been captured in Afghanistan. Everyone thinks she’s dead. Angie’s lawyer mother busies herself with work. Her adopted Korean brother busies himself being obnoxious. And Angie goes around wearing her sister’s too-small b-ball T-shirt, trying to stay out of the mean girls’ way. At one point, she tries to slit her wrists and comes out bleeding onto the basketball court. Then KC comes to town. Cool and cute, she makes a beeline for Angie and no one can figure out why (including the reader). But as the world turns, so do the pages, and Angie decides maybe she can play varsity basketball like her sister, and maybe she can have a “gay-girl-gay” relationship with KC—although KC’s cutting gets in the way. Some of the characters don’t push much beyond stereotype, but Angie’s anguish and the dysfunction of her family seem quite real. As the story spins toward its conclusion, elements may seem preordained, but the emotion with which they’re infused gives them new life. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper

Fat Angie: required reading

I believe that Fat Angie should be required reading for all who work with teens, and for teens too. It captures the heart of being different in high school, both the heart ache that it brings as well as the triumph of overcoming that adversity. If even one person can see you for what you really are, it frees you to see yourself that way too, and that is the first step to acceptance. This is a beautiful story, and a significant book. It will stand the test of time. I know because I am 59 years old and it spoke to the me that survived the nightmare of high school with the help of friends. I understand Fat Angie; I lived her pain. To see a book that does not dwell on self pity but rather focuses on the joy of never giving up and not giving in, to see that nonconformity is not a sin and should not feel the need to be forgiven, is wonderful. I highly recommend this book. It's stunning. My deepest gratitude to the author for planting this beacon of hope to all of us who work with kids and want so very deeply for them to survive intact and unique, as beautiful as we know they can be.

raw, funny and some (kc) romance

When I started reading "fat angie" it took me a few pages to find narrator's voice, but once I did, I didn't put the book down until I finished it. This is a story about pain and suffering that comes from bullying, but to just call it a book about bullying would be selling it short. The parts about the bullying are harsh, raw and hard, somehow though I felt the cold distanced contempt of Angie's mom, the most painful.
It's a story about people showing up, the coach an unexpected friend and of course romance.
in Fat Angie the romance part comes from KC Romance, the new girl in town. The fact that is a "gay-girl gay", as both girls call it, romance adds a little extra dimension to the book, but it's more about the emerging romance, that first doubt, that first kiss and it just happens to be two girls that fall in love.
Fat Angie is about of doubts, about love, about coming of age. Fat Angie is struggling with who you are, who you want to be, about finding perfection in imperfection. Fat Angie is about bravery and fear and I loved it.

Simply Wonderful

Fat Angie is so much more than a book about bullying. It's more than a book about loss. And it's more than a book about self-discovery. It's a cautionary tale about what happens to the people left behind in war and an illustration of the disconnect that occurs in families suffering through intense grief.

The subject matter is raw at times, the approach unblinking, but there's an undercurrent of hope in the face of daunting situations and against sizeable odds that makes Fat Angie a joy to read.

And in case this review sounds too dark, let me add (without spoilers) that there are Hoosier-type moments and a quirky version of happily ever after, too:-)

Almost took a star off for making us wait for Part Two!

Great story, Great characters who were well developed to the point that I cared about them and had a hard time stopping each time I resumed reading... For that reason, I actually took longer to finish this book than most that I read, because I wouldn't even bother if I didn't feel like I'd have at least an uninterrupted hour. And in my life, uninterrupted hours are hard to come by!

So yeah, very good pacing, action, description, logic, enough twists to keep you thinking you've figured out what's coming next, followed by the shock of being wrong, and thinking "THIS TIME" you've got it figured out, only to once again, feel your head spinning as the clues reveal just how far off you were.

Can't wait for the next installment!!

Impressive first-time author

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! The author does a great job with making sure the reader can understand what is happening in the story. Time travel can be a confusing topic to read about, but I never felt lost while reading this book. The scenes and characters were easily created in my mind with the help of the author's descriptive writing. I love the characters, and the ending will shock you. I can't wait to read part two!

Just finished and loved the book! It was a pleasure to read. The plot was interesting and flowed smoothly through-out the story. The author built the characters well enough that I cared for each one for different reasons, and worried when they made stupid mistakes. The book had a little of everything. Even humor, which I love. There is quite a bit of imagination, and wow what a twist. Can't wait for the next book.

In 1941, a few months before Hitler's invasion of the USSR, the Axis powers conquered the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Until the end of World War II, a series of interrelated struggles took place over this territory, an ideological and ethnic war waged by rival powers and armies and fought between insurgents, armed bands, and militias. These groups were influenced by many ideologies and sought either to return to an imagined past within the Nazi New Order or to form a new Yugoslavia sympathetic to the Allied cause. The victors were communists, led by Marshal Tito, and, until now, the history of this short but tragic period has been mainly told from their perspective.

Drawing on oral histories and archival sources only recently made available, Stevan K. Pavlowitch, a world-renowned historian of the Balkans, reconstructs a complete portrait of this complicated history. Many wars were fought alongside, as well as under the cover of, the Allies' war against Hitler's New Order, and in Yugoslavia, these battles created a "new disorder" that historians are only now beginning to understand. Turning to the work of scholars in several languages, Pavlowitch illuminates what actually happened on the ground, providing a definitive history of what Yugoslavs endured on both the Axis and the Allied sides.

Excellent Antenna Theory Primer and Reference

This is a perfect book for those just getting started in antenna fabrication and design. Loaded with Figures.

Written on an 8th grade reading level, it contains the basic 468/f for dipoles, how to match impeadance to many different types antennas, transmission line do's and don't's, figuring heighth above ground, how to gamma match, computing SWR, using and figuring decibels on Windows Scientific Calculator... so much more.

This book is easy enough to read that my 10yr old found the 462/f for large diameter elements and cut a ground plane for 10m from a piece of toprail from a chain link fence. We now run a beacon on 28.2565 on that antenna.

If you can comprehend the Technician book, this book is on the same level.

Also, it's perfect for reference.

Great Book

This is an excellent book for any ham and for any junior engineer beginning work in the antenna area. Mr. Hallas unifies the discussion of antennas by using ENZEC to simulate the various antenna types. It is not an antenna textbook that uses vector potentials etc. By combining physical insight in combination with the ENZEC simulations to verify the insight, the whole field is made comprehensible. This is also done in a readable and concise style. Finally, I would mention that Mr. Halas' years of experience show up in many comments in the book.

Good book, but...

This was a good introduction to antennas. I'm not a total beginner, as I have a basic understanding of electromagnetism and related concepts. This did help quite a bit to understand relationships between antenna height above ground and radiation patterns, etc. The section on types of matches to use with yagi antyennas was especially useful.

However, I felt the book should have been written a a stand-alone book, rather than relying upon (and to some extent, advertising) antenna design software.

I read about half of the book, focusing on the basic concepts and later, designs that most closely apply to my planned applications. It left me feeling like I couldn't easily analyze antenna designs without purchasing the recommended software. So, 4 stars for teaching me quite a bit. But in order to get a full five stars, it should have been written to stand on it's own, omitting the chapter dedicated to the software. I just hate buying a book only to learn that I have to buy software in order to make full use of an entire chapter.

Still I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the basic concepts.

Great Resource for Staff Development

We used this book for staff development of our Critical Incident Response Team and all agreed it is a MUST read for any university administrator that works with, for, or in support of campus crisis management efforts. Zdziarski certainly knows his stuff! Our team used the text to not only increase knowledge but also to identify gaps in preperation and service. We wil be encouraging several other teams to use this text as well...
