book with many approaches to oil painting

The book is filled with demonstrations on how to approach and start oil paintings and has everything one needs to know to get started. There are step by step illustrations of the various ways to start, as in starting with line and mass or with tone as another one. He has projects to do also. It covers techniques, as in knife painting too, glazing, blending colors on the canvas among others. These are just a few things mentioned as the book covers everything... color balance, harmony, value, composition, etc., etc.

Helpful exercises

I love the artists work in this book and the lessons are very helpful. The only down side to the book is that my book makes the artists works appear flat and dull. I hope that it was just my print. I would recommend the book nonetheless due to the wonderful exercises that helped me a great deal.

Great book to have for reference for what is important in a painting. Had the honor of being taught by Mr.Smuskiewicz while attending the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and it's good to hear him again about the key pieces of a painting.

Dowd’s perspective is grounded in his extensive and highly regarded strategic consulting with leaders in both the political and business world and interspersed with experiences in his personal life. Hopefully this book will be part of spurring a new generation of leaders.

Book Review of A New Way,

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It offers perspective on leading with your heart when making choices in our life. How to lead our own lives by our values. Matthew writes about how America is at a cross roads. he speaks to the importance of choosing our next leader. Not only the next President, but on a much more local level, choosing our leader closer to home and our respective states. I likened it to our own lives and how we each go through transitions or phases in our lives, and how we spend time or should spend time turning inward to decide which leader we want to lead us. Like how we decide to lead our own lives according to our values, how sometimes we stop and think about our next move forward.

There are some very funny personal stories, sad stories and inspiring stores Matthew shares and I think most of us can relate to. This book really spoke to me on a personal level as I have been going through some difficult times and transitions in my life. One sentence from the book that resonated with me is “We have to spend time reflecting on ourselves, to see our fears clearly, to hold them, and then make decisions out of a sense of love.” Such great advice.

This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

Beyond Kabbalah...

If you've studied Crowley for even a few hours, you'll realize that you're not going to open this book and understand what he was getting at just by reading through the text a few times. This is undoubtedly a work that requires careful consideration of so many implicit elements. To list what you need to consider to get at "the deeper meaning" of this book, I'd have to sit here all day.
The interesting thing about this book is that you don't necessarily have to analyze the text thoroughly (though it's certainly worth it) to get something out of it. Some of the 'poems' evoke a good laugh, some are beautiful and inspiring and can easily become a personal gem of wisdom for the reader (for me, "The Mountaineer".)
When I first started getting into Crowley's writing, a friend recommended starting with the Book of Lies. Other friends naturally scoffed at the recommendation, and insisted I start with The Book of the Law. Now I wish I'd gone with the Book of Lies first, so that I could come back to it after reading other Crowley just to see how far I've come in the Great Work. Even if the Great Work isn't your goal, this book if nothing else is a fantastic conversation piece. I recommend it to not only occultists, but to all book lovers. It's fascinating.

Kindle edition is a mess.

I'm profoundly disappointed. This Kindle edition is just a "converted to eBook" version of the text transcriptions which have been on the internet since the '90s. Who authorized this? The current version at hermetic.com has been improved over the years to the point where this Kindle version is just a sad relic. The Book of Lies deserves a high quality Kindle version. Avoid this one.

Madison Nicole Ziegler, born in Pittsburgh, PA, is an award winning professional dancer and actress. Fun for Fans of Maddie

Dance Moms is my guilty pleasure and I am a total fan girl when it comes to the show and the girls on the show. It does not matter that I am much older, I still just enjoyed the show. I was so excited when this arrived in the mail today (thank you Gallery Books) that I immediately started to read it.

I am giving this around 3.5/3.75 stars.

I am not a huge fan of non-fiction, but I flew through this and finished it in only a few hours. It was a very easy and fast paced read. It did seem to jump around a little bit and had random things thrown in, but it still was pretty good. I definitively think fans of the show or Maddie will still enjoy it. I also think this is perfect for younger teens.

I really liked the personal touches throughout this book. There are small doodles from Maddie and pictures from her being a small child up until now. These were nice touches. The message throughout this whole book is pretty positive, and I think Maddie really shows her pride in being a positive role model for her peers.

I also liked the letters from others who know and have worked with her. I personally did not care for the Dear Maddie sections and could have done without these. However; I love the Today is a Beautiful Day entries.

I enjoyed that the other girls from the show are mentioned, especially Kenzie which you would expect since she is Maddie's sister. I liked learning a little more about her. But, there really is not much at all about Dance Mom's in itself in this book which was a little disappointing. There was not even a mention of Abby (the ALDC was mentioned), and I feel a chapter should have focused on Abby and Maddie's relationship. It did include information about Maddie and her past accomplishments: a little about Dance Moms and the dances from the show; Sia; her fashion line; SYTYCD and upcoming projects.

Overall, I did enjoy this but I was hoping for a little more. I am still glad I had the chance to read this and I look forward to seeing what else Maddie does in the future.

Fast read that is perfect for Tween girls!

I was skeptical to read this initially. Watching Dance Moms and Maddie's work on some TV shows, I thought she was adorable and very talented, but I wondered how much of her life was what she wanted versus what her parents were pointing her towards. This read was, to some degree, like reading a school assigned journal. Part record of this point in her life, part guidance and tips for other tweens, part hawking of her clothing line, and part musings about clothes, make-up, fashion, celebrities, and friends, this was a fun quick read. You aren't going to learn massive secrets or Maddie's deepest inner thoughts. You aren't going to get dirty laundry about the ALDC and her family. This is not a book about gossip. It is a cute look at a teenager learning make up tips, accessorizing, and experiencing the world. I'd love to see Maddie write a book in 10 years and see how much has changed and how much has stayed the same. At the same time, I hope lots of girls read this. Courage, in all its forms, is a necessary life skill. It takes hard work and dedication to compete in any arena. Malala is brave. Zendaya is brave. Maddie is brave. and the world needs more brave, hard working, creative, and smart young women to lead!

I love Maddie and look up to her, and this book made me love her more. It was a really great read. I'm 13 and I loved the layout of the book: with all the doodles and photos! 100% recommend it for anyone!
