Review
Praise for "NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories"
A "New York Times" Bestseller!
I can say with certainty I ve never read a rock biography with such balanced elements of sensation and sincerity. Like the few great band bios, the array of experiences described in "The Hepatitis Bathtub" are enough to set anyone into contemplation about strength and perseverance, love and depravity, camaraderie, and a place for misfit rock and rollers in a society that to this day clings to rigid standards. A must-read for punks new and old and an eye-opening read for all new-comers. John Cameron Mitchell, Hedwig and the Angry Inch
NOFX and Fat Mike are amongst the most powerful influences of my genre. This book is a must own for anyone who still cherishes what is left of Punk and Rock n Roll. Joan Jett
Not for the faint of heart, and therefore HIGHLY recommended to EVERYBODY. Amanda Palmer
Fucking gnarly. And great! Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day
Fat Mike is a rarity in music, an unadulterated authentic. In a profession filled with phonies and withholders, Mike shines as someone who always lets his freak flag fly. I like that a lot. Jane Wiedlin, The Go-Go s
Better than Rancid s book. Brian Baker, Minor Threat/Bad Religion
What can I say? There are not enough real punk bands left in this world we live in. If you need a little history lesson on how all this shit started, and what the true meaning of being punk rock is, I suggest you read this book now! Insanely funny, disturbingly honest, and delivered straight from the heart, this book just makes me like NOFX even more than I already do!! Read it now fuckers!! Fletcher, Pennywise
The Interrobang, 5/29/16
Honest and sincere tales of life as members of one of the longest running and most influential Punk bands.
"Classic Rock," May 2016
Compiled in the style of Motley Crue s "The Dirt," this readable and engaging account of a band who live life almost as fast as the music they play is predictably rip-roaringFor being a book that spares nothing, this one is hard to beat.
"AM New York," 3/27/16
[A] raw, tell-all autobiography.
Ultimate Guitar, 3/21/16
Aside from being very entertaining, it is also a very informative book about a band who, for the vast majority of their career, refused to do interviews and refused to sign to a major label, even when bands like Green Day and Blink-182 were cashing in.
"Alternative Press Magazine," 4/7/16

While many might expect a NOFX book to be filled with humor and non-stop hilarity, that couldn t be further from realityThe band opens up to tell some of their darkest stories about their livesSure, there is some humor, but overall, the book is loaded with sadness. It is amazing that from the ashes of all of their lives a band like NOFX could not only rise, but continue to thrive.
"Ground Control Magazine," 4/12/16
A definitive history of NOFX. No attempt is made to cover or smooth out any rough or hard memories, "everything" feels as though it has been included in the name of telling the whole storyThe character of each band member is meticulously presented and articulated and, after one has made it through the whole book, readers are left feeling as though they truly know themIn a world where many rock bios seek to do little more than collect myths, "NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories" bravely stands and tells the great, unbelievable truth.

"New Noise," 4/12/16

"Tampa Bay Times," 4/17/16
A harrowing memoir"The Hepatitis Bathtub" is peopled with lunatics, sociopaths, addicts and loved ones who couldn't escape the punk abyss, with the band struggling to survive dark turns ranging from drug abuse to counterfeiting to disastrous investments to friends' deaths to, um, matricide (allegedly).

Entertaining readingThe sheer amount of unapologetic honesty and self-deprecation on display is a refreshing twist for a genre generally reliant on hagiographic mythology and an overabundance of egoAt its heart, NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories is the story of friendship and perseverance in the face of personal and professional adversityNOFX have raised the bar for rock n roll memoirs in terms of the volume of sex, drugs, alcohol and general prurience to an absurd new level, one that subsequent bands will be hard-pressed to surpass. They ve also shown themselves to be a fun-loving, even sensitive family of misfits who would do nearly anything for one another. In this, Hepatitis Bathtub manages to toe the impossibly fine line between gross-out humor and earnest reminiscence, making for a wildly enjoyable, disgusting, hilarious ride told with equal parts hubris and self-effacement.

READ IT

I loved NOFX as a kid. I still love them as an adult but music has played a smaller and smaller role in my life as I get older. I was worried my now adult self would find this book to be immature or sophomoric. I read it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. This book is so incredibly written, and the lives that these guys have lived couldn't be made up. This book is intense at times, other times it will make you laugh, make you tear up, and sometimes you'll say out loud "what the hell?".. This is honestly one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. Even if you don't love NOFX, or punk music, this is the kind of book that will make you reflect on your own life.

I read an entire book
By TL
Pretty rare for me to make it through a whole book (thanks dyslexia), also pretty rare to read a music bio book that goes into the details of how screwed up people can get but also has some light at the end of tunnel redemption. This is not just a laundry list of all the dumb sh*t each band member got into although there is a fair amount of that. Its also an interesting read on one of the few bands that is truly an independent and has been doing it for a very long time successfully and on their own terms to say the least.

Eriks story takes center stage here and rightfully so as it could be used as a model for anyone whos life has gone totally off the rails and needs to know that they can come out the other side.

Ill admit I am biased because I was lucky enough to call Erik a friend of mine when I lived in California for a few years. I knew some of the back story already just not in the vivid detail in the book.. Its even more amazing when you know the guy because he is one of better quality people you will ever meet. Just glad I met post rehab Erik and not the one who would have d*ck punched me for fun.

So yeah.. I read it in one day and Ill give it five stars and I hate to read.

Wow, what an excellent book!
By Chris
Probably one of my favorite books of all time. I experienced a wide range of intense emotions; I literally laughed like a maniac at some of the stories and cried my eyes out during other ones. In between is a sense of experiencing the scene from early 80's LA hardcore to the present, all from a multitude of firsthand band member accounts. Song meanings are clarified as well throughout the book which is pretty cool if you are a fan of the band.

I finished it a couple weeks ago and am still thinking about it. This book is no joke and if you like punk rock and hardcore then you should read it or the Moron Brothers will wipe their butts with the inside of your pillow case.

Rethinking the Messianic Idea in JudaismFrom Indiana University Press

Over the centuries, the messianic tradition has provided the language through which modern Jewish philosophers, socialists, and Zionists envisioned a utopian future. Michael L. Morgan, Steven Weitzman, and an international group of leading scholars ask new questions and provide new ways of thinking about this enduring Jewish idea. Using the writings of Gershom Scholem, which ranged over the history of messianic belief and its conflicted role in the Jewish imagination, these essays put aside the boundaries that divide history from philosophy and religion to offer new perspectives on the role and relevance of messianism today.

"Absolutely stunning."—Times Literary Supplement

"This remarkable, superbly translated novel derives from the life of the real 19th century explorer John Franklin…[whose] adventures are conveyed with spellbinding skill."—Publishers Weekly

The Discovery of Slowness—a huge commercial and critical success across Europe, where it is considered the popular author's masterpiece—recounts the life of the nineteenth-century British explorer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847).

Through the author's acute reading of history and his marvelous storytelling prowess, the reader follows John Franklin's development from awkward schoolboy and ridiculed teenager to expedition leader, governor of Tasmania, and icon of adventure. Slow and deliberate from boyhood, Franklin appeared destined to be a misfit. But he escaped from the ever-expanding world of industry and Empire to the sea's silent landscape, where the universe seemed more manageable. At age fourteen he joined the navy. After surviving the harrowing battles of Copenhagen and Trafalgar, he embarked on several voyages of discovery into the Canadian North, and served as governor of Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). Everyone with whom he came into contact sensed that Franklin was a rare man, one who was “out of his time” and who moved to a different, grander beat. That beat eventually led Franklin to sail once more—on his final, fateful voyage—into the Arctic in search of the Northwest Passage.

The Discovery of Slowness is a riveting account of a remarkable and varied life. And it is also a profound and thought-provoking meditation on time. The result is an unforgettable and deeply moving reading experience that justifies the novel's reputation as one of the classics of contemporary world literature.

"Nadolny evinces remarkable empathy with his unlikely Odysseus and Ralph Freedman's translation captures the crystalline freshness of the author's imagery."—Washington Post Book World

"The Discovery of Slowness is a masterpiece of characterization, a portrait of inwardness in the most outward-thrusting of lives."—The New Republic

"Fluid and suspenseful, a thought-provoking reminder of contemporary society's tendency to speed through everyday life."—The Providence Journal-Bulletin

"Amazing…His book is a historical painting, a seafarer's novel, a love story, an outcast's story all in one. This variety appears very harmonious, just as it incidentally, almost secretly, reflects on our right to discover the world at our own, personal pace."—Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung

"Sir John Franklin is the embodied contrast to the frenetic agitation of the modern world. The discovery of slowness is the slowness of discovery."—New York Review of Books

"Nadolny's vision is conveyed with restraint and charm…He has written a Utopia of character."—New York Times Book Review

"Its appeal lies in its observation of the texture of life, seen by a character who has to work everything out from first principles. It needs to be read slowly, to be absorbed as much as understood."—Scotland On Sunday

"This is more than an adventure; it's a meditation on time and perception…Not to be rushed, or forgotten."—The Herald

"Nadolny brilliantly sets the narrative pace to the rhythms of the frozen landscape, and to the 'slowness which is bred by hunger.'"—Robert MacFarlane

"This is both a wonderful historical novel and a spell-binding individual portrait…This is a marvellous translation of a masterly work."—The Observer

From Publishers Weekly
Brutal stuggleagainst Arctic ice, enveloping seas off the coast of Australia, the death ships of Napoleon's navyis etched here upon a canvas of the contemplative and methodically slow thought of John Franklin, whose brain sends no signals to speak or move until it has fully conceptualized a situation. From boyhood John's slowness has been phenomenal, allowing him to hold a rope taut for hours, his arm upright, and gather superhuman strength in the process. The sea, volatile but profoundly changeless, is his precise home; to be the captain of a ship is his goal from the time he is ten. He becomes an expert navigator and learns the function and capacity of every sail, spar and sheet. By age 14 Franklin is a midshipman, at 29 a captain at last. His progress is strewn with naval battles, exploration of unknown coasts and experiences of starvation and mutinyadventures that are conveyed with spellbinding skill. Finally his most compelling dream is realized and he leads a first and then a second expedition to the still and silent Arctic. Fame and riches follow; at age 60 he again sails to the Arctic, where he dies. This remarkable, superbly translated novel derives from the life of the real 19th century explorer John Franklin, who bestowed the name "District of Franklin" to the northern archipelago above Canada.

From Library Journal
This fictionalized biography chronicles the life of 19th-century explorer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847), credited with discovering the Northwest Passage. A slow, deliberate, and strange child, Franklin joins the Navy at 14. After many years of seafaring, he becomes governor of Van Diemen's Land, later renamed, by him, Tasmania. Despite his much-needed prison reforms and remarkable humanitarian efforts, Franklin is eventually removed from office and returns to a life of adventure on the sea. Unfortunately, the Franklin that Nadolny gives us is an admirable but oddly colorless character. Constructed on the unoriginal premise that "slow" people can achieve great things, this tale is an endless narrative of stilted, stifling prose. Ronald L. Coombs, SUNY Downstate Medical Ctr. By Michael Neff
A conventional narrative in many ways, yet oddly interesting due to the "twist" about the character's "slowness." Otherwise, similar to a "Horatio Hornblower" novel. But this is interesting in its contrast of slow, deep character to swift, surface character.

Read It More Than Once
By Jill Ireland
My encounter with this book was a bit magical. I arrived at a B&B in Vail and one of Mr. Nadolny's other books was on a table in the common area. I asked about it, and the proprietress said Mr. Nadolny had left that morning and had given her the book. I read it, loved it, and sought out his other works.

My favorite review of this book describes it as "a utopia of character." Truly it is. Yes, it's a nice little biography of an interesting life, but it is so much more. Sir John Franklin realized that each individual has his or her own "speed" in perception and action. Throughout his life, he observed himself and others objectively and developed his own "systems" for the most beneficial application of his own uniquely slow processing of impression and responses. He compensated with rigorous planning, precision, and observation - and by appreciating and effectively leading those who were faster.

Why is this interesting? I believe it is so because in our own times, everything moves way too fast for most of us...and those of us who might be naturally slow in the manner of Franklin suffer most from it. If Franklin were a boy today, he would likely be put on Ritalin, or diagnosed with "Sensory Integration Disorder" or some such thing, possibly placed in a "special" class at school...and his uniqueness would be deemed pathological and buried.

Franklin's qualities, and his persistent but self-accepting stuggle with them, made him the best of leaders and a deeply moral man. Rereading this book, I am led to realize that my own "true inner speed" is perhaps as slow as Franklin's, and that much unhappiness comes from not operating at that speed. This is painful - we can complain about our over-stimulated, over-informed, over-hurried times, but that is futile unless one decides to retreat completely to our own Walden.

Franklin found two things paralyzing: self-pity, and what he called "disapproval," meaning disgust with circumstances he could not change. So he resolved to avoid these and concentrated on his "systems." It worked...perhaps some of us can do the same. And if we are parents, we must make sure we understand and respect our children's "inner speed."

In sum, read this book - and do so more than once to absorb the nuances.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
A handbook that is intended to cover clinical research and practice in the area of eating disorders and obesity should be representative of the field, provide critical guidance, and be accessible to the nonspecialist. According to these criteria, this handbook succeeds. It accurately portrays progress and problems. In the chapters that involve science -- such as genetics, the epidemiology of risk factors, diagnosis, and therapeutic outcomes -- the writing is clear and critical. In the chapters in which science is thin or nonexistent, the authors acknowledge that fact while advocating various therapies (e.g., interpersonal, cognitive and dialectical-behavioral, family, feminist, and pharmacologic), an increased awareness of cultural differences, the need to combat the "toxic environment" of fast foods, the importance of childhood sexual abuse, the psychological and economic issues related to cosmetic surgery, and the role of the media in shaping the perception of desirable bodies. Four of the 35 chapters concern disturbances in body image and body dysmorphic disorder. The discussions in these chapters are based on the plausible idea that dissatisfaction with one's body is a predictor of eating disturbances and that "internalization of the thin ideal [mediates] between sociocultural pressures and body dissatisfaction." Given that most, if not all, adolescents have some complaint about their bodies, research must identify the specific links among body dissatisfaction, eating disorders, and obesity. Research should also clarify why so many of those who are dissatisfied with their bodies and live among media-generated fantasies of thinness, "fat talk," and fast foods do not have anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or severe obesity. The factors that protect young people from these disorders may be the most useful source of new information for the development and implementation of effective preventive measures. Three chapters discuss eating disorders and obesity in childhood and adolescence. The large increase in childhood obesity in the past decade is ominous, and so is the lack of a robust research effort in this area. It is a truism of public health that the earlier detection and intervention occur, the bigger the payoff for the afflicted person in terms of personal satisfaction, social function, and physical health. The savings in costs of health care and increased economic productivity are much larger than any that can be gained by intervention in the case of adults. A final point: this handbook reflects the field's baffling failure to use test meals to understand the disorders of eating. One of 750 pages of text mentions test meals, cites a statement from 1990 that test meals are "the quintessence of behavioral assessment of eating disorders," and then notes that "test meals do not appear to be used widely as an assessment tool." This is like being interested in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders without measuring sleep. A reader could not learn from this handbook that test meals had been measured under laboratory conditions in research involving people with eating disorders or obesity. Given that test meals are an unambiguous, quantitative, and defining phenotype and are a proven bridge for translation between the clinic and animal models, the resistance to their use requires analysis. Review
"A handbook that is intended to cover clinical research and practice in the area of eating disorders and obesity should be representative of the field, provide critical guidance, and be accessible to the nonspecialist. According to these criteria, this handbook succeeds. It accurately portrays progress and problems. In the chapters that involve science...the writing is clear and critical..."

Well Worth the Money
By Pavel Somov, Ph.D., author of "Lotus Effect," "Present Perfect," & "Eating the Moment"
Never mind that this book (as of the writing of this review, 2008) is 4 years old. This is an impressive and clearly organized handbook on the topic.

The "Treatment" section of the book is particularly well executed: included are CBT, IPT, Feminist Therapy, Family-Based treatments, Pharmacological Therapy, and, of contemporary interest, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for eating disorders. The chapter on Internet-Based Treatment strategies for eating disorder population - for 2004 (the year of publication) - was clearly cutting edge; and for 2008 - still very much topical.

After reading and reviewing a few other handbooks on eating disorders, I have found it to be particularly noteworthy that each treatment is a whole chapter, not just a self-evident (for the professional reader) truism, with a total of 170 pages - approximately a fourth of the entire book!

The "Special Topics" section of the book goes beyond the "miscellaneous" cliche sample of sub-populations and sociological topics. Whereas you'd typically find an overemphasis on, say, eating disorders among athletes and a chapter on cultural aspects of eating disorders, this particular handbook sheds light on a more diverse spectrum of topics - for example, cosmetic surgery and eating disorders, child abuse and eating disorders; and offers a greater depth in covering the usual special section suspects - for example, it offers a chapter that juxtaposes eating disorders among children and adolescents, and a similarly in-depth coverage of the differences in presentation of eating disorders between boys and men.

The list of the contributors is impressive as well: a good deal of academic, clinical and clinical research heavy-hitters.

Worth the money and time. The book on eating disorders successfully meets the ambition of its PDR-like mandate as a reference book on the literature.

Physical Chemistry (Topics in Physical Chemistry), by R. Stephen Berry, Stuart A. Rice, John Ross

Every chemist should own a copy of this uniquely thorough yet incisive treatment of the basic principles of physical chemistry. Written by three eminent physical chemists, the second edition of this exceptional work is the most lucid and comprehensive physical chemistry reference available. The authors present the fundamentals of the three major areas of physical chemistry--the microscopic structure of matter, the equilibrium properties of systems, and the physical and chemical kinetics of transformations of systems--in a logical sequence, from the simple to the complex. Beginning with atomic and molecular structure, they progress to properties of condensed matter, to statistical and thermodynamic properties of systems in equilibrium, and then to transport phenomena and chemical reaction processes. The book's mathematical level begins with elementary calculus and rises to the use of simple properties of partial differential equations and the special functions that enter into their solutions. The conceptual structure of physical chemistry is emphasized throughout and appendices develop the details of the mathematical tools as they are needed.

This new edition features:
In-depth and illuminating presentation of conceptual arguments
 No shortcuts--derives whole formulas
 100 new problems
New material on nuclear magnetic resonance
Expanded treatment of linear and nonlinear irreversible processes and thermodynamics
A completely revised treatment of electrode kinetics
 Many updates throughout
Several vignettes--written by leaders in the field--that cover topics at the cutting edge of physical chemistry research

Review
"I find the progression from microscopic to macroscopic more effective than following the chronological advancment of physical chemistry. In fact, students usually do very well when they start our current, and traditional, sequence midway. The vignettes are very well done and exciting."--Preston J. MacDougall, Middle Tennessee State University

"This is a well-written, logically-developed presentation of physical chemistry. It presents quantum chemistry first, as I believe should be done. It continues to be (in its new edition) the most demanding book in the field. Most of our undergraduates would find it too difficult, but it might be appropriate for our graduate students."--Hal Harris, University of Missouri, St. Louis

Clear, and comprehensive, and well organized
By RacemicMixture
This textbook is one of the best text in Physical Chemistry in the modern time. Although not a classic, it is well organized and pulls all the important information and problems from a variety of sources. The writing is clear and logical for both undergraduate and graduate students alike.

The worst book ever
By C. Liu
This is the worst physical chemistry book ever used. Luckily, for most, it is rarely used precisely because it is so terrible, especially as an undergrad text. Maybe this is a good textbook for graduate-level studies or, as my professors use it, as a reference text for someone who has a PhD in the topics already.

SUMMARY OF GIANT FLAWS:
- Typos in figures, equations, text, etc.
- Ambiguity and errors in wording (the difference between speed and velocity means a lot in solving homework problems!)
- Math comes out of nowhere with no justification
- Extremely wordy and unclear
- No example problems - a tragedy for use at the undergrad level
- Chapter and section are not listed at the top of each page, so have fun memorizing that Ch29 is on Dense Phases, not Kinematics!
- Information needed to solve problems (i.e. specific heats, etc) is often not even found within the text
- It is the weight of a small child

I would like to share with you a small sample of the reviews of the book from course evaluations from my last quarter of Thermodynamics:

"Berry, Rice, and Ross was the worst textbook I have ever used, in any class, ever. It actually decreased my understanding of the material every time I tried to read it. The text reads like it was translated badly from German--horribly convoluted and unclear. The entire thing was rife with errors--important equations would stated incorrectly, captions to figures made no sense, homework problems would refer to the wrong equations/figures, etc. There were no example problems, variables were poorly defined (you would have to search through huge paragraphs to find out what theta* was, and even once you found the reference you would still be confused), and stupidest of all, the chapter and section numbers were not listed at the top of each page, so that you were never sure what chapter you were in as you flipped through the book."

"BRR was the worst chemistry text I have ever had. NEVER AGAIN should it be used for this course, or any other undergraduate thermo course, for that matter."

"Physical Chemistry, by Berry, Rice, and Ross. Frankly, the book was not very useful at all. It was incredibly dense, not concise at all, and frankly sometimes downright confusing. I feel like some of the problems from this book were more difficult because you had no idea what they were asking than because of the science involved."

"SO BAD. BRR has way too many typos throughout. I hate it so much waj n jhmj, mmmvfhgt bh kh mnhg nbgn b. Sorry, its just impossible to express my frustration and rage with BRR in words. The problems are also very poorly written."

"Berry Ross and Rice is easily the worst textbook I have ever used in college. If you randomly picked a book from the Library of Congress catalogue, it would be more effective at teaching thermodynamics than BRR. It is incomprehensible gibberish, with a healthy dose of typos to further prevent learning."

"The text was awful (authors: BBR,Berry and Rice?). It was expensive, heavy, and terribly written. There were mistakes throughout the text, which made understanding the material only that much more difficult. Nothing was explained well and the limited derivations of equations were stilted and useless. It was really frustrating to have to spend so much money on something so unhelpful and even detrimental to my learning."
