A Detailed, Well Researched, Eminently Defensible and Convincing Thesis

This book is a signal achievement by its author, Rene Salm. While Mr. Salm's preceding work, The Myth of Nazareth, provided a broad historical review of the contrivances within Nazareth's claimed archaeological record, NazarethGate advances this work by conducting a more focused analysis of the efforts of modern researchers and their purported "discoveries" at Nazareth. Salm's treatments of Jerry Vardaman's purported discovery of the Caesarea Inscription and the dubious public claims of Yardenna Alexandre (which are belied by Alexandre's own official reports) are themselves worth the price of admission. Overall, this book is well researched, well reasoned and refreshingly honest.

Departing somewhat from the subject matter of the chapters that precede it, this book's concluding chapter partially reconstructs the early development of the Christ myth. Here, Salm draws upon the work of Michael O. Wise, distinguished Talmudic scholars and a host of others to support his identification of at least one of the character strands that were later drawn together to form the fabric of the New Testament's Jesus narrative. This discussion is substantial yet not lengthy or overly distracting, and its conclusion seems well deduced and reasonable.

In sum, it has long been recognized in North American archaeological circles that the stuff practiced in the Holy Land contains much sleight of hand and tendentious interpretation of results obtained through standards that fail to pass disciplinary muster. The author confirms this through a series of detailed analyses that show just just how absurdly contrived the traditional position relative to a 1st century Nazareth truly is. Upon taking a first look at Nazareth's archaeological profile, any objective analyst familiar with the methods and precedents of reasoning in New World archaeology will conclude that the city almost certainly did not exist in any appreciable form at the beginning the first century CE. While this may have long since been obvious to those with formal training and practice in the field of archaeology, NazarethGate builds upon the foundations laid in The Myth of Nazareth to make that same conclusion ineffably available to everyone. Mr. Salm is to be thanked for this public service, and congratulated on what is truly an important and decisive work.

Archaeology and the Wizard of Nazareth

This book is a real eye-opener! It not only confirms all the claims made in Salm's first book (The Myth of Nazareth), it reveals all the shenanigans of the religiously motivated biblical archaeology apologists and the Israeli tourist industry trying to keep gullible Christian tourists coming to the "holy sites" in Galilee. The firm determination that the famous "Caesarea Synagogue Nazareth Inscription" was a hoax perpetrated by the nefarious evangelical apologist Jerry Vardaman is stunning. While I have for a long time been skeptical of all the Franciscan claims from Nazareth, I had never questioned the authenticity of the Caesarea inscription. It seemed to be the only archaeological anchor placing early Nazareth in time. The fact that Vardaman was arrested by Israeli authorities ON THE SAME DAY he came up with the Nazareth fragment is absolutely mind-blowing.

Archaeological apologists must now come to a terrifying realization: Just as there could never have been a Wizard of Oz if there never had been an Emerald City or Land of Oz, so too, there could not have been a Jesus of NAZARETH if there was no Nazareth at the turn of the era when he and the holy family should have been living there. Perhaps, though, evidence for a Jesus of Somewherelse will be discovered.

Meanwhile, it is not likely that the Israeli tourist industry is going to take this book sitting down. Salm has debunked all the "discoveries" that have been made since his first book predicted their invention (including the so-called "house from the time of Jesus"), and it will be interesting to see what new earth-tremors emanate from the tombs underlying the Church of the Annunciation. Perhaps even more coins will be found in one of the tombs alleged to have been the kitchen of the Virgin Mary. Perhaps coins bearing Vardaman's "microletters" informing us that "this coin belongs to the Virgin Mary"?

Make no mistake about it: billions of dollars are at stake in this archaeological controversy. Not only does the Israeli tourist industry Goliath depend upon the shekels of credulous Christians who think the holy sites in Israel are genuine, the income of the Vatican and of Christianity in general is in danger here. Will Mr. Salm soon be able to change his first name from Rene to David? While in the eyes of secular scientific observers his pen has proven to be every bit as deadly as the legendary sling-shot that brought the old Goliath down, it is not clear that committed Christians and tourism capitalists can be made to take notice of the facts.

Needless to say, I hope this book finds a wide readership.

New book by Rene Salm confirms that Nazareth did not exist at the time of Jesus

After Rene Salm published in 2008 "The Myth of Nazareth: The Invented Town of Jesus", defenders of the Faith (and of tourism revenues) wasted no time to try and contradict his documentation. Four days before Christmas, 2009, the Israel Antiquities Authority held a major press conference and media blitz to announce the excavation of a "house from the time of Jesus" in Nazareth by Yardenna Alexandre, as well as her find of some allegedly "Hellenistic" coins in "Mary's Well". However, in his latest and just published book "Nazarethgate: Quack Archaeology, Holy Hoaxes, and the Invented Town of Jesus", Salm meticulously debunks this alleged evidence and shows that the "House from the Time of Jesus" was in fact a wine making installation from later years. For instance, one of the walls on which the archaeologist Yardenna Alexandre based her claim to have found the "house from the time of Jesus" was hidden inside a later and thicker wall from the Mamluck era, but she confidently asserted its unseen and unverified presence and also its alleged dating to the time of Jesus just because this is what her narrative required. Similarly, the "Hellenistic" coins used to assert the occupation of the area "during the time of Jesus" had none of the designs the numismatist Ariel Berman claimed to have seen on them. These coins were so abraded and corroded that no designs at all could be discerned on them; they could just as well have dated from Ottoman times. These are only some of the most salient of the pious frauds Salm exposes among the desperate efforts to keep the belief in Jesus' Nazareth alive, and of course in Jesus of Nazareth who was said to have been brought up in a town that did not exist in his time. A revealing read that may make you think twice about many other claims by the Catholic Church and by the Israel Antiquities Authority!

In this way, he proposes a new approach in which teleological anthropomorphisms as well as reductionist metaphors are avoided.

The author then presents a theology of nature in which particular attention is given to the immanence of God and to Divine kenosis. Finally, the book offers a theological anthropology, including chapters on the harmonization of paleontology and theological anthropology, the limits of sociobiology, and original sin in relation to scientific knowledge of the human person.

Science, with its discovery of evolution, positively enriches theology. The study of nature improves our knowledge of God.

Archbishop Zycinski argues that both Christian anti-evolutionism and anti-Christian scientism are each regrettable fundamentalisms. The Archbishop rejects both extremes.

This book was just too wordy. The topic is very easy to understand and the facts are there for anyone who wants to search for the truth. This book could do it a lot simpler than it did. I wasn't impressed.

This could save your life!

I recommend this book to anyone looking to alter the way of life and everyday activities. If you have interest in holistic health, I would suggest beginning with this book. This is perfect for the beginner or as a refresher. This one was a breeze and held my interest throughout, as well as evoked my passion. If you are interested in Ayurveda, this is a great intro and quite thorough at the same time!

Beautiful story

This is a lovely family tale that just happens to concern a GLBT family.

This could have been any family, anywhere. The story revolves around a couple who have adopted two boys. The 1st boy was adopted when he was 6. Even though his parents provided access to counseling, due to his previous circumstances, Andy has serious abandonment issues.

Although they were not looking to adopt a 2nd child, Kyle's situation called to both parents and they adopted him as well.

Andy's abandonment issues come into play full force as he believes his parents will no longer be interested in him now that they have another, younger child in the home.

Kyle, realizing the problem, elects to remove himself from the situation and runs away. Andy is able to find Kyle and the ending chapter that brings them together is brilliantly done. I can easily see two young men having this discussion.

Realistic, beatiful, heartbreaking and full of hope

I would have bought this story anyway because all proceeds go to charity and for such good cause, but I really really enjoyed it too. Another reviewer said it all - this could have concerned any family, but just happened to be about LGBT family. My heart went out to both boys and what they went through and what their parents went through, just felt so believable, so very realistic. Personally I am just glad that people like their parents do exist in the real world.

I'd rate it higher, but I wish it was longer!

17 year old Andy lives with his two dads, is an average student, and has an average life. When Kyle comes onto the scene, Andy feels upset and abandoned - don't his parents love him enough to not replace him until he has moved out for college?

What I liked about this short story was that I caught the character dynamics really quickly, and was able to individualise each person in my mind really clearly. The characters were consistant, and the action was engaging enough that I didn't feel the pages passing by.

My complaint would be that it was too short! As a short story, it was great, but I felt that there could have been more! I wanted to know more about Andy's childhood (although what was mentioned of it was smoothly integrated), and more about how the family dynamics would change in the future.

This short story is a great one for also illuminating the plight of queer people in trying to adopt or foster children in need. Same sex parental units are no worse at parenting than 'traditional' couples, yet often they are ostracised and their children treated differently. I can imagine Andy's response and Kyle's bullying as being quite typical of what these people would experience.

I'm going to look out for other novels by this author in this genre, and perhaps branch out a bit too. I'd give it four stars, simply because although I loved it, I wanted more, more, more!

I received this novel from the author as part of a new Goodreads initiative by the group YA LGBT Books called 'Read-to-Review'. The requirement of this program is that you only ask for one novel at a time, and that reviews are posted within one month of receiving the copy. I was so excited to have something short and queer to read, I had to read it the same day!

Here's how you should read this book

Rather than copy the other very astute reviews, let me just tell you how to read this book. It's challenging, and it doesn't always follow the standard dictates of plot, but you may enjoy it more if you know what to expect.

1) It's not a page-turning, finish-in-one-night kind of book. If you try, you'll miss out. I had to read it over several days, each session giving me a hundred things to think about.

2) When you get anxious for the plot to pick up, think of it as satirical standup, and read it like you'd listen to the comics to which Beatty's compared, namely Dave Chapelle. (If you're thinking of it as a novel instead of as satire, you can lose the thread of hilarity) When you're overwhelmed by the satire, think of it as a novel and try to piece together the experiences that make up Bonbon's character. It's hard to get hold of his character at times, and trying to summarize Bonbon Me's character is a (rewarding) reading experience in and of itself.

3) You may want to have google at hand so you don't miss out on the plethora (this word is on my mind after one particularly funny bit near the end), of cultural and historical references. You might know Plessy v. Ferguson and the scopes trial, but it would be hard, I think, to catch every reference, and the satire depends on them.

4) Yes, it's funny, but not in the LOL way as often as 'that so true it's painful' way. Reading the reviews, I expected to be chuckling every few pages. Instead I had a wry grin every few sentences. Don't let this deter you. The verbs come at the end of sentences so often that you really have to read it at a run if you don't want to lose the thread of what's going on, but I can guarantee the thread is worth catching. In the last few pages of the book, Beatty comes as close to speaking to you plainly as the author as he does in the entire novel, and what he had to say tied the its many disparate observations together perfectly.

Bad timing for a satiric novel about racism, unless you're devastatingly good

Who writes like this? I asked myself, having been overwhelmed with satiric jabs after about 25 densely written pages. Ishmael Reed? And then why compare Beatty only to another black writer? Was that racist? Woody Allen wrote this densely, stories full of caricatures and outrageous situations, but New-York-Jewish in subject, and then only a few pages long, not an entire novel. Surely Beatty couldn't keep it up.

But by page 227 his comic inventions were still going strong. Here the protagonist converts the "long out-of-business brushless car wash" in his L.A. ghetto into a "tunnel of whiteness" for the local children, with "several race wash options:"

By "dense," I mean that almost every sentence contains a comic explosion, a twist, something that leaves you breathless or laughing out loud. Who does that? I thought of Barry Hannah, a Southern writer now gone. I think Hannah would have admired Beatty and recognized a literary kinsman. Also, something about Beatty's writing seemed to come from African-American oratory, its ornateness maybe, like Stanley Crouch's writing about jazz, but it wasn't self-conscious. Certainly the point of view was uniquely African-American, and I'm sure as a white reader I missed some of the inside humor. But plenty hit home with me, and would with almost any other half-alert citizen of this great land.

Speaking of which: this is a horrible time in our culture—with everyone's cell phones recording the underbelly of brutal racist policing, with political reactionaries running amok—to be attempting satire. It damn well better be funny. Beatty succeeds with a scenario that's not only side-splitting but right up to the minute. (I'm tempted to give more examples but will forbear) He's brilliant. (He's also profane and vulgar, as how could he not be? The n-word alone is used probably 1000 times)

Chris Rock can be devastatingly funny sometimes. Key & Peele can be outrageously funny sometimes. Making a barb leap off the written page is harder. As one critic said: Beatty can reduce a sacred cow to hamburger with one sentence.

Catch 22 for race in America today

As James "Firlds of Fire" Webb carried a copy of Catch 22 around I Corps, I can see Catch 22 from an artistic distance as pure comedy.

Paul Beatty may in fact have more howling Catch 22 silliness per page than Major Major Major imagined. The narrator's two beloveds may even exceed Lieutenant Sheisskopf's wife.

From a Publisher's Clearing House grant of certiorari on his Me v. America law suit, and an unforgettably silly Clarence Thomas question about a black man accused of holding another as a slave, the word play and popular culture riffs resemble a fire hose.

Unless you take yourself too damn seriously, it is constant flow of chuckles interspersed with laugh-out-loud howlers. Myself, I was too serious circa page 120 but saw the Catch 22 analogy by page 200.

If you are not kinda sorta offended every now and again, you may not be paying close enough attention.

Obviously earned the Mann-Brooker prize, first to an American.
