New Standard In Checkmate Instruction?

I think that this is a modern chess classic. It is one of the finest chess books I have ever seen. English GM John Nunn is universally acknowledged to be one of the best chess authors in the world, and he has again lived up to his reputation. The content of the book is outstanding. Nunn has combed many thousands of games to find the best examples from modern play. (You may be surprised at how many strong and even famous players fall into relatively simple mates.) Every significant type of mate is included (eg, back rank mates, mates w/ doubled rooks, mates on the diagonal, queen sacks, mates by line opening, and many, many more), including mates that were not easily categorized. Most examples are from quite recent play. A useful feature is that the mates are categorized into 5 levels of difficulty. Level one problems are just that, quite elementary, while the level five problems require rather advanced skills to solve. So one approach is to solve all the level one problems, then cycle through the book again on level two, and so forth. Each chapter is followed by a valuable quiz to test your mastery of the material. The large format book is very attractive, with clean, dark fonts and large clear diagrams that allow you to work w/o a board if you like. Answers are kept separate from the problems, placed at the end of each chapter, so you won't be tempted to glance over at an answer. My favorite checkmates book had always been Renaud and Kahn's 'The Art of the Checkmate' (still a delightful and useful work), but this book easily surpasses that one. It is one of the finest chess books I have ever seen, and should be part of your core collection of chess books. Mastering a wide variety of checkmates is one of the best ways to improve your chess, and this may well be the best book available on the subject. Very highly recommended.

Perfection realized for Kindle

This book is exactly what it claims to be - a massive collection of find-a-mates. Nunn's collection is the best of its kind that I know of (although the Polgar book is a time-consuming marvel as well). I bought the Kindle edition and, to echo the comments of a previous reviewer, the formatting is sublime. One (and only one) problem per page, followed immediately by the solution. The board display is quite large in each example. Why in the world this format has evaded other puzzle books is a mystery to me. (On a side note even "The Giant Chess Puzzle Book," also written by Mr. Nunn, differs slightly. It seems this is the lone chess book that really "nailed it" for the Kindle.)

Awesome way to learn checkmate patterns

I have been wanting to get a good checkmate puzzle book with chapters divided into themes, and I'm really happy with this one. Perfect for training pattern recognition.
