About the Author
Andrew Klevan is Lecturer in Films Studies at the University of Oxford, UK. He is author of Disclosure of the Everyday: Undramatic Achievement in Narrative Film and Film Performance: From Achievement to Appreciation. He is the co-editor of The Language and Style of Film Criticism, and is on the editorial boards of MOVIE - A Journal of Film Criticism and Film-Philosophy Journal.

Fascinating monograph

Andrew Klevan's book might be only 152 pages long, but they are dense pages, packed with information, observation and insights about a major Hollywood star and the people she worked with. I thought everything had been said about "The Lady Eve" - arguably one of the best film comedies ever made - but Mr. Klevan offers new observations and insights. His pages on Ball of Fire prompted me to take another look at it - an informative and rewarding experience. If you're looking to read a shallow, 'pop culture' piece on Barbara Stanwyck, this book isn't for you; BUT, if you're willing to spend time with a highly intelligent, articulate observer, by all means, buy this book!

This is a very interesting read if you are interested ...

This is a very interesting read if you are interested to looking further into Barbara Stanwyck's acting styles. However this is not any sort of biography. It focuses on a few of her films and really delves into the characters she portrays and makes one really appreciate her acting ability.

Superb and stimulating!

This is a striking portrait of a wonderful actor. The writing is pin-sharp, eloquent and vivid. It brings to life, and illuminates, so many moments of Stanwyck's extraordinary talent. I have no clue why the previous reviewer misguidedly focused on Freudian theory; Klevan is far more subtle and probing in his accounts of the films than this suggests. I recommend this entertaining and accessible book to everyone interested in good film criticism. Five stars!
