I started my professional life as your typical IT development geek, creating software delivery joy through the use of things like patterns, agile methods, and overall object oriented goodness. For the most part I was disappointed in the way IT delivery projects were managed, the reason they were started, and how they ended up. This dissatisfaction with the status quo led me to gradually embrace a new mission in life, to help IT knowledge workers to become awesome at what they do. To that end I've created the Deloitte LEAN service offering, providing advisory, coaching, and change management services to IT departments. I've built this capability within Deloitte to help our IT clients truly transform the way they operate their business. Over the last several years I have played a leadership role in some of the largest Kanban based enterprise transformations worldwide. Recently I have guided several large public sector organizations along the path of becoming a learning organization. I keep adding new thinking tools to my organizational transformation utility belt, including lean startup, gamification, business model generation, and other collaborative, high feedback systems necessary to developing the next generation of work environments for knowledge professionals. The best C tutorial book

This book by Steve Kochan is absolutely the best book for anyone starting out programming in C. This is an excellent introductory text with frequent examples and good text. This book makes no assumptions about the particular computer system or operating system on which the C language is implemented. This books is written for novices and experienced programmers alike. I love this book as the comprehensive 'teach by examples' book can help you master the unique features of the C language. There is complete coverage of program looping, decision making, arrays, strings, pointers and bit operations and helpful end-of-chapter exercises. This is the book I used to learn C and it really is a great book. The K&R book is really great as a reference, but not as the first book.
I reviewed this book back in 1995 on the LEARN C/C++ TODAY list and it is still the best book for learning C out there.

Concise, Elegant and upto the point

I used this book to cut my teeth in C. Of course, I know Pascal which helped me a little, but most of what I know in C is due to this great book. This book is the best buy for anyone looking for an easy to read, concise book in C. Those looking for a reference type book will not find it very attractive. But for most people like me, who are beginners this book is more than worth the money, but if you can, look for an older/used copy.

This is an excellent book for beginners, with little or no programming background. Whether you know previous languages, like pascal, fortran or basic, or you have no programming background at all, you will find this book simple, informative and to the point.
I highly recommend this book as an introductory book for learning ANSI C.

Cross-linked polyethylene (also called PEX) is becoming a new standard for indoor pipes. This stuff is resistant to extreme temperatures and stress as well as to chemical damage from acids and alkalines. The material is flexible and suitable for use in temperatures below freezing and up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, including potable water.

PEX is easy to thread through stud holes without binding against the wood like a rigid copper pipe can do. When a pipe reaches a corner, simply bend the flexible pipe through the corner studs—no joint is necessary. With PEX supply line, fewer joints save time and reduce the likelihood of a leak. PEX is less expensive than copper, and PEX joints can be made with simple quick-connect couplers.

Just What I Needed

First off- I'm a new homeowner who purchased a house that had been a rental for 20 years prior; so a fixer-upper. Second, I'm fairly novice at home improvements, but have usually figured things out fairly successfully on my own when I've rented other people's places. But since this is my house now, I wanted to do things the right way- not just a passable way based on my looking-doing solutions. This book is perfect for that. I've only had the book since Christmas- a subtle hint from my wife to get going. I noticed right away that it's intended to be there where you're working; the cover is tough, tear and water resistant with metal reinforced corners, and the pages are similarly tough.

I've only had a chance to do some of the quick fixes, but I've been doing them the right way this time, and I can see how doing it the right way means doing it so that it will last. I've fixed some of the damaged grout on the bathroom floor that had caused water damage on the ceiling below; and caulked the kids tub. Now that it's cold(ish- I mean, I live in GA), I've been fixing some of the drafty door jambs in a more permanent way than the self-adhesive stripping I'd used in the past. I'll tell you- as I tackle some of these smaller jobs, it's gotten me looking ahead to some bigger projects, and the direct, clear and concise instructions and tips make me believe that I can handle it. For that matter, some of the jobs I've been putting off because of money look a lot more affordable with a lot of the tips- like flipping boards on the deck that are in good condition.

The biggest challenges I have now are prioritizing what to do first, and keeping my wife off my back, since she knows I can do it now.

Just got a copy delivered. Impressive. I was extremely happy to see how "DIY" this book really is. Very informative from top to bottom. Illustrations and text so very simple to understand. ( unlike furniture instructions from IKEA ) This group knows how to layout information for us weekend guys. This should come with your house when you purchase a new home or even better a "fixer-upper." Great job!

Poor description of product

I ordered what I thought was a set of books because of the way the product was pictured. What I received was one book, Islam by John Williams. I contacted the seller and was told that this happens frequently because they get sets of books and single books get separated and that is what is sent to customers. They offered to give a partial refund, but I didn't think it was worth paying anything to return this book, which didn't cost much to start with. I had ordered the set to replace one book, Catholicism...unfortunately, now I have two on Islam..The seller needs to make it clearer that it's only one book in a set and post only one picture, not one of the entire set.

Also included are appendixes on information theory, game theory, branching processes, and problems of optimal control. Each of the eight chapters and four appendixes has been equipped with numerous relevant problems (150 of them), many with hints and answers.
This volume is another in the popular series of fine translations from the Russian by Richard A. Silverman. Dr. Silverman, a former member of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University and the Lincoln Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is himself the author of numerous papers on applied probability theory. He has heavily revised the English edition and added new material. The clear exposition, the ample illustrations and problems, the cross-references, index, and bibliography make this book useful for self-study or the classroom.

If you're collating and identifying old, family photos, as I am, this is a wonderful guide for placing photos and their mounts in a timeline. Many family photos don't have names on the backs, so you have to go by clothing and hairstyles. This helps simplify the process. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for one detail. The author gives the cut-off date of 1900 for the use of tintypes, but in places like Montana, these continued to be produced into the 1920s. There were a lot of backwater photographers that went around to county fairs and still took these. I have some of them. Also, the author should have warned people that certain types of small frames were often re-purposed and newer photos later put in them or old ones were swapped out. Those are small details, though. A great quick guide, for sure.

A Strong and Well Constructed Text

As an instructor in Family Systems, I feel that Nichols & Schwartz have put together a very comprehensive overview of Family Therapy. Although at times it is somewhat tedious, the historical approach taken in this book allows a student or scholar the opportunity to piece together the different ways that family therapy is seen. I feel that the section on Cognitive-Behavioral Family Therapy did demonstrate a certain level of author bias, but this is understandable, given the authors backgrounds. Finally, there does seem to be some misunderstanding of individual approaches and a need for more multicultural issues to be included. Overall, this is a strong text to introduce a student to the field of Family Therapy.

A Very Comprehensive and Thoughtful Text on Family Therapy

I have tried several books on family therapy as texts for my graduate course on Family and Couple therapy. This book is superior to other books that I have tried. The authors explain theoretical positions clearly and most importantly organize this vast area of social science into a well-organized discussion that is interesting and easy to follow. This textbook is pretty small, at a huge price. The pages are so thin I can literally read the backside and front of the next page through the paper. The quality of the printing is also terrible. ****I was given an Advance Reading Copy of this book for my honest review. I have not been paid for my review!****

I have known of this author for a while and I even have a couple of her books including Book 1 of the (Oyster Harbour Series) but this is the first book I have actually read by the author.

This is book 3 in the Oyster Series and this is Sadie and Henry’s story.

Henry is Caleb’s brother and Sadie is Pearl’s cousin from book 1. You can read this story without having read books 1 and 2 because the author gives you enough information to fill in the gaps.

Henry is you’re more silent, strong, caring and protective type of man. He does have some learning difficulties and he has made some mistakes but this does not make him stupid. He just loves being on the sea amongst the elements as opposed to running his family Oyster Company, Rockfields.

Sadie lives with her mother and has been left by her husband for another woman, so we know she has issues. Some of which are jealousy, resentment, low self-esteem and airs above her station. She is a smart woman and is living below her expectations. She tried to go to business school but of course being black in that era was not accepted into any of the educational facilities to pursue her dreams. This in my opinion makes her a little bitter as she does not want to be working with Oysters for the rest of her life.

The story started a little on the slow side for me. I did not really connect with Sadie. I found her to be a troublemaker, overbearing and double minded especially when it came to her relationship with Henry. I was rooting for Henry the whole time. He was always sure and never weaved in his feelings towards Sadie even when she was actively putting both of their lives in danger by taking and making decisions that could get them killed or burnt on a cross.

Sadie was double minded in her feeling toward Henry, she blew hot and cold. One minute she cared for him and the next minute she did not want anything to do with him. I found her attitude towards Henry totally frustrating. She was the dominant one in the relationship, which Henry did not seem to mind, she was constantly putting Henry down and comparing him to Caleb all the time.

I don’t want to give too much away about the story you will need to read it for yourself to experience what I am taking about. Some of the characters from the other 2 books make an appearance in this story.

I am not sure enjoyment is the right word to use for how I feel after reading this story. However, an interesting prospective on an interracial relationship from this era, the concept of the woman being more dominant than the man.

Wonderful Read!

First, let me say that I love this series! It was so good to read Sadie's story. When we first met Sadie, she wasn't a fan favorite but totally redeemed herself. She had to deal with so much suppression in her life, from her mom to her husband. It was so great to see her get the love she deserved. The relationship between Sadie and Henry was very hot. I loved how they developed into the part when they started seeing each other. It was very hard for them and I liked how the author detailed out the difficulties of being in an interracial relationship in the 1930s. I loved how Sadie had Henry by the balls. But we left off with the KKK basically taking over Pearl Harbor during Plucking the Pearl. Fast forward to Sadie's Surrender and the KKK is still running things. Afton has me interested in a certain KKK member, even though he is repulsive. Her writing has me that hooked!! I loved this so much and I do think it's my favorite of the series! Great Work, as always!

Falls short

The writer states up front that she struggled to feel sparks between Sadie and Henry and it is very apparent throughout the book. I tried but just could not connect with either main charcacter. Sadie got on my last nerve. Petulant and selfish were some words that came to mind. At times she seemed willfully ignorant of her situation and the times, even when her actions put her family in danger. She also kept whining about her looks but I felt the author never gave a a good description of her. If you like Alpha males, Henry is not it. He is a good character but needed more development. I like this author but just could not get into the story.
