About the Author
Bennet Omalu, MD is the forensic pathologist who first identified gridiron dementia. He has examined the brains of retired NFL players who suffered from dementia and major depression due to repeated concussions sustained while playing professional football. Dr. Omalu has published extensively in respected scientific journals and is a member of more than 17 professional organizations.

This book may save your child's life

This book may save your child's life. Literally. Being a brain imaging physician for the last 20 years I have seen many, many brain injuries in children, teens, and adults who played football and other contact sports. In this book, renowned neuropathologist Bennet Omalu takes an authoratative look inside the skulls of three retired NFL players to uncover a new type of dementia called Gridiron Dementia. You can read about Dr. Omalu's struggle with the NFL hired physicians, which is a fascinating story all by itself, and learn about the lives and deaths of some amazing athlete warriors. The book is beautifully written, insightful, and very important. I highly recommend it.

Bennett Omalu - Smartest Guy in the Room

Many doubted or outright discounted Dr. Omalu' diagnosis of gridiron dementia - CTE - in the brains of deceased NFL players because it meant that football was a dangerous sport. After finding the neurological tangles and deposits of tau proteins in the brains of several deceased football stars, no one could deny his findings.
What I liked most about this book was its frankness. Omalu didn't make any direct accusations against NFL higher ups - he simply said they missed this obvious side effect of the game by "fault or default." This book was written by a neuropsychologist, but I could understand each & every word he wrote. And when I couldn't, there is a glossary I could refer to. He used no technical jargon that only clinicians could grasp. This made for a good read!
I've been researching Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy since I first watched the documentary "League of Denial" on Netflix. I noted that so many people with CTE end up going broke and committing suicide. I couldn't connect the dots; I couldn't perceive how CTE would push one to blow all his cash & kill himself. But after reading this book, I understand. Omalu made the toughest topics easy for any laymen to grasp.
The book's brevity is remarkable in that I learned so much in such a short time. I would recommend people read this book when they consider putting their young into a sports program. Sports programs are awesome - we teach our kids sportsmanship, loyalty, and self-pride. But we need to take head injury seriously! EXCELLENT READ!!!

Describes how long-lasting and subtle a concussion can be. This book sheds light on a subject that stumped 4 medical doctors - they just gave up on my wife after she has been struggling with post-concussion syndrome for over two years. We have recommended it to our friends who have teenagers playing competitve sports and some of them have had concussoins.
